Raphael from Diaspora stepped in after the incident I discussed yesterday in What a maroon. Well done. Color me impressed.

We exchanged some email afterwards, and he invited me to please stick around. Guess I will :-)

Adam32 May 5th, 2011 6:37 am Auto-Focus the First Text Field Only if you want to annoy keyboard users like me. We need to be able to csohoe focus for ourselves in a logical order; not in the order that a designer thinks is right. Combat Spam by Hiding a Text Field With JavaScript It's excellent that you should support the avoidance of the hell that is squiggly symbols, but why this? If you want a human to use it, why hide it? Secondly, if you rely on JS to sort humans from bots, I might be picked out as a bot just because I have to use a text browser. Thanks.Remember that every form must degrade to a basically functional state if JS is not supported. Use a Question Mark Icon for the Password Recovery Link If I was able to see such a symbol in my browser, I would not expect it to be a link. What is wrong with anchor text? Ask for a User Name After The User Has Signed Up Excellent suggestion. Auto-Fill City and State Fields Based on User’s ZIP Code That would be OK if it ever worked, but I know folk who would happily tell you that it never works for them.By the way: I had to copy/paste this comment because your textarea is virtually unusable: its HTML column value is set at 0, which is just plain dumb.

/ I've met some cool writers thugorh Twitter, but most of my closest writing buddies I met thugorh an online workshop a couple of years ago (the Science Fiction & Fantasy OWW). I keep thinking that I need to get out and meet some more local writers, but it's hard to get over those introvert tendencies.

A few months ago, polepe who play World of Warcraft went through a similar run-in with Facebook. They were planning to force everyone who used the official forums to have ther real full name signed to the posts, and since there's already a feed for each character detailing what they were doing at any given time, it would have been blatantly unsafe. The forums there tend to be volatile, but the community reaction against this and WoW's integration with Facebook was bigger than any response there, ever. So big that 'RealID' was indeed aborted, but the privacy dodginess goes on.To see it happen there, then to see it here is massively unsettling. Anonymity on the internet no longer seems to be in fashion; it's not in Facebook's (and others) commercial interest to allow it to be.Great post, thank you. :)
